Hesperia CA
Hesperia CA is a former railroad town, named and promoted by developers from the US & Santa Fe Railroad. The developers named the city after Hesperus, the Greek God of the West, as part of a plan to attract 100,000 people in 10 years. However, only about 1,000 settlers arrived. Located in the Mojave Desert, Hesperia CA was simply too dry to appeal to most people. Thanks to the arrival of the interstate in the 1940s later developers had better luck attracting residents to Hesperia CA. By the 1980s it was a thriving suburb and today the population tops 90,000.
